  1. Start with whose site you are investigating
  2. Keep estimates distinct from observed reporting
  3. Separate discovery from improvement
  4. Example: investigating a fall in your own clicks
  5. Label sources within a combined report
  6. Establish what is still missing before paying

Start with whose site you are investigating

For your own search performance, begin with access to the correct Search Console property. For competitor pages and keyword research, an external research database such as Ahrefs may be relevant. A competitor without granted access does not become another selectable Search Console property.

Keep estimates distinct from observed reporting

Do not label an external estimate as an observed click count. A disagreement can arise because the measures have different coverage and definitions. Label source and scope in a client report, and do not turn estimated competitor visibility into a claim about that company’s actual revenue.

Separate discovery from improvement

Discovering an uncovered topic and improving a page already receiving exposure are different jobs. Competitor research may inform the first; your property report is a natural starting point for the second. If you retain both tools, assign them different decisions rather than paying for overlapping reports nobody reconciles.

Example: investigating a fall in your own clicks

For a decline on a page you own, begin with its search evidence and release history. Starting with external competitor estimates can distract from your own access restrictions, indexing directives or content changes. Add outside research when a concrete question remains, such as a change in the types of results competing for the audience. Sequencing the investigation helps avoid unnecessary purchasing and data assembly.

Label sources within a combined report

In a combined report, distinguish owned-property observations, competitor estimates and the analyst’s interpretation. A competitor estimate rising does not directly prove that your own change failed. Inspect actual results and content where needed, and state why further investigation is warranted. Keeping source roles visible preserves trust better than disguising the difference. Each metric should have a stated decision purpose instead of being placed beside another simply because both are available.

Establish what is still missing before paying

First create an improvement shortlist using Search Console, then name the information that remains unavailable. If the missing input is competitive context or a new market, assess a suitable research subscription. Include the capacity to turn research into changes; access alone does not implement a strategy.
