Test a known-file edit
Provide a type definition and conversion function, then ask for one additional input format without breaking compatibility. Test how each workflow limits the edit scope. A small file count is not the goal by itself: the meaningful criterion is whether the resulting patch changes only what the requirement needs.
Test investigation separately
An issue described only by its symptom requires finding relevant code before editing. Compare how clearly each workflow explains its investigation path and assumptions. A known-answer patch test does not measure that experience. Require an opportunity to approve the diagnosis before the proposed fix is applied.
Use the same Git review standard
Finish both evaluations with the same Git diff and independent behavior check. Verify that the explanation matches the actual code. If dependencies were added, ask why they are needed and whether a smaller solution exists. A lengthy narration should not receive credit that the patch and verification evidence do not support.
Include model and review effort
Access routes can bill the same task differently. Record model spending alongside setup, review and repair time. Distinguish reuse of a suitable existing contract from a new provider arrangement, then estimate using your measured workload. Do not compare an API bill with an unrelated subscription allowance as if both purchased the same thing.
Example: separating known and unknown scope
Use a known input-validation function for one task and an unexplained screen error for another. Keep the records separate and distinguish finding relevant files from applying the change. Even if a candidate feels better on one task, decide how closely that task resembles your own workload before generalizing the result to an adoption decision.
Make the team choice explicit
Choose the file-scoping and investigation workflow your reviewers can operate. If both pass, compatibility with existing Git and billing administration can be the deciding factor. The adoption goal is that another team member can understand the work when the original operator is unavailable, not that every task becomes unattended.
