Identify the actual switching reason
Allowance, provider choice and review ergonomics are different problems. Pick the one that motivates the switch so improvement is observable. A model that answers more pleasantly does not necessarily solve a contractual or permission-boundary issue, and a cheaper route may still preserve the same operational difficulty.
Test Aider for known-scope changes
When relevant files are known and Git is your acceptance surface, test Aider on the same change. Verify a contained patch before trying broad investigation. Include model configuration and environment maintenance in the comparison, rather than treating a terminal client as a complete managed development service.
Evaluate Cline’s supervision loop
If you want to configure providers and action approval, inspect Cline’s effective settings. Test what evidence appears before editing and command execution. Even when automatic approval is used, require the supervisor to explain which actions it permits and which remain outside the task.
Consider narrower daily assistance
If you mainly need completion and targeted explanation, test Continue’s assistance modes. An alternative need not replace every delegated task. Returning to smaller suggestions while humans manage the overall sequence can be a good operational choice when broad autonomous work creates more review effort than it saves.
Example: replacing only the missing role
A limit affecting large modifications does not require changing completion at the same time. Conversely, increasing delegated work may not improve a need for frequent small suggestions. Break the current workflow into roles and replace only the unsatisfactory part during the pilot. That reduces configuration changes and makes the benefit easier to attribute.
Verify before changing contracts
Complete a change, its tests, a Git handoff and a follow-up modification by another developer before switching contracts. Verify the required entitlement as well as spending. Keep the previous working setup available until the replacement has demonstrated a maintainable result, not merely a successful first answer.
