Define the competitor-research question

Define whether the research should commission a new article or strengthen an existing answer, rather than stopping at a competitor’s popular-page list. External-site information, including that offered through Ahrefs Site Explorer, is not your site’s observed search performance. Open a few candidate pages, examine their purpose and identify evidence you can add. Distinguish the amount of information displayed from the quality of the resulting decision. A usable comparison should show how either workflow gets from an estimate to a justified action on your own site.

Align the comparison conditions

Record target domains, country, language, period and metric definitions. The services need not hold identical datasets, so a numerical disagreement is not automatically an accuracy verdict or performance ranking. Preserve unavailable coverage as a limitation and identify what can actually be compared on a consistent basis. Use Search Console observations for your owned-site decisions while labeling external estimates separately. Confirm that the intended subscription supports the evaluated research. A comparison conducted under another plan’s privileges cannot be transferred uncritically to a smaller retained contract.

Compare one identical research brief

Pick one website, a small competitor set, and a concrete question, such as which existing pages deserve revision next. Use the same brief in both tools. Record the deliverable and the steps needed to produce it. A larger list of numbers is not automatically more useful than a shorter report that supports an actionable editorial decision.

Inspect the evidence behind a recommendation

Open a few of the pages behind each recommendation and inspect the search results yourself. Compare the proposed opportunity with your own performance records where available. If estimates differ, investigate the country, date range, and metric definition instead of averaging unlike values. Your goal is a defensible decision, not agreement between two proprietary datasets.

Test a short investigation separately from ongoing work

A one-off competitive investigation and monthly monitoring have different cost structures. Complete one brief, then estimate the repetition that introduces capacity or access constraints. Prefer a report that leads to an identifiable change over a larger export that no recipient will use.

Evaluate the complete research output

Use a hypothetical assignment such as selecting five articles to revise with a reason and evidence for each. Follow the work through candidate extraction, page inspection, deduplication and an author-ready explanation under comparable conditions. Compare whether the deliverable is usable and how much additional research remains. Fast navigation alone is not enough. If you later conduct the exercise, record time, inputs and features actually used, and publish measured results separately from this proposed evaluation design. Do not present a plausible workflow as a completed benchmark.

Budget the recurring operation

Map monthly research frequency, tracking conditions, staff and exports to current plan terms. Keep monthly billing, annual commitments, optional capabilities and legacy contracts distinct. A one-off investigation may justify a different duration from continuous monitoring. Both options still require people to validate data and turn findings into editorial work. Include that capacity in the decision rather than assuming subscription access completes the process. The appropriate choice is the one that fits a maintainable operation, not the largest bundle the team could theoretically access.

Explain reasons not to adopt

If the immediate need is basic owned-site search review, first see whether Search Console completes that task. Even when external research is useful, recurring billing may be unnecessary without recurring work. If adopting either tool, record the purpose, review date and outputs to preserve. Include deferring the purchase as an option rather than forcing every reader into a two-provider choice. Explaining non-adoption conditions makes the comparison more transferable to a small publisher’s actual stage and avoids treating tool ownership itself as a search-growth strategy.
