Distinguish recording from synthetic use

Possessing a recording does not by itself establish permission to synthesize new statements in that voice. Identify the speaker, production operator, destination, languages and intended duration of use, with clear approval responsibility. This is an operational checklist; it does not determine legal compliance for a particular agreement or jurisdiction.

Follow the exact provider procedure

ElevenLabs’ Professional Voice Cloning documentation limits that workflow to the owner’s own voice with verification. Having another person’s recording and consent is not described as an equivalent way to create their PVC. Descript also requires explicit recorded voice authorization. Follow each provider’s actual process instead of treating these procedures as interchangeable or omitting the required speaker participation.

Control the script and operators

Verification does not mean every new script is approved. Retain the authorized script revision and limit generation access to the people who need it. Where speech could be understood as a client’s or organization’s statement, arrange review of the completed output by the accountable person. Account capability and editorial approval are separate controls.

Plan for withdrawal and handoff

Decide who stops new generation if the speaker withdraws participation or the operator changes. Maintain a map of published outputs, source recordings, shared voices and account ownership. Check the current provider features and agreement for the scope of deletion or revoked sharing; do not assume one account action automatically removes every previously distributed file.

A production-operator handoff

Imagine the operator leaving the organization or project. Identify who stops new generation, controls scripts and recordings, and reviews the treatment of released material. Resolve that ownership before production becomes dependent on one person’s account. The speaker and release owner should understand the operational arrangement; technical access alone does not provide a durable production agreement.
