Separate the surface from the agent
Cursor Agent combines search, edits and command tools. Claude Code documents CLI, IDE, desktop and web surfaces. Whether adoption requires moving editors depends on the selected route. If retaining extensions, debugging and test configuration matters, evaluate investigation and diff review in that arrangement first. Surfaces within a product need not have identical entitlement or settings. Record version, execution location and authentication route with the comparison. This prevents a comfortable interface in one demonstration from being mistaken for an eligible complete workflow under the account and environment you would actually maintain.
Compare investigation before edits
Use a hypothetical list defect where rows with an absent optional field disappear. Give equivalent repository copies, inputs and expected behavior, then request diagnosis and relevant files before edits. Record clarification supplied to either candidate. A person steering one attempt toward a known answer changes the evidence; that should not appear as a product difference. Compare the ability to return to supporting files and identify uncertainty rather than explanation length. Agree on the diagnosis before accepting the patch so investigation quality remains distinguishable from edit application and subsequent review.
Inspect interruption and review
Observe where you can pause work and inspect a partial change when several files are affected. Narrow unrelated cleanup or dependency additions before acceptance. Check test expectations against the original requirement instead of only the new implementation. Finish both attempts with the same ordinary Git review and independent behavior check. Record interface convenience separately from the reviewer’s ability to explain the patch. A readable conversation can coexist with an unnecessarily broad diff, while a terse interaction can still leave a useful accepted change. The evidence should show which arrangement the responsible reviewer can operate consistently.
Align model and billing assumptions
Cursor’s current entry tier restricts model access, while eligible higher access can still charge third-party use separately. For Claude Code, distinguish subscription from API or other provider access. If the models and conditions cannot be aligned, state that difference rather than attributing every result to the product interface. A hypothetical budget should include fixed access, consumption through acceptance, setup support and human review. Inspect the frequency and behavior of allowance interruptions. The lowest headline price is not a comparison of equivalent work when it buys a different model or execution arrangement.
Compare effective action scope
A pilot is not controlled if only one candidate can use production credentials. Use development copies with equivalent files and sample data and define verification commands. Inspect reading, editing, external communication and release authority separately. Defaults can differ by surface and version, so review the effective settings rather than assuming an older demonstration applies. A local interface in either product does not establish local inference. First satisfy the required data boundary, then compare supervision effort. Mandatory conditions should remain eligibility gates rather than preferences that a cheaper or faster-looking answer can outweigh.
Choose a transferable operating setup
After both candidates produce acceptable work, ask another maintainer to add one optional field. Record help needed for startup, finding context, diff inspection and tests. Coexistence can make sense when roles are distinct, but define a handoff point instead of letting both edit the same files concurrently. Before ending unused access, preserve code and checks in the repository. Choose using the operating arrangement someone else can continue, not solely the answer you preferred on the first attempt. The pilot should leave a specific reason for adoption and a workable fallback.
