In this guide
  1. Locate the question before choosing the report
  2. Compare scope before comparing totals
  3. Separate publication checks from interaction checks
  4. Example: clicks rise without approved outcomes
  5. Keep stable definitions for recurring comparisons

Locate the question before choosing the report

Investigating search exposure or clicks differs from examining subsequent website actions. Break a whole-site change into important pages and journey stages. Do not use one report to guess facts outside its scope. Record what was observed at each stage so a search presentation problem is not confused with a broken on-site interaction or an unmeasured commercial outcome.

Compare scope before comparing totals

Check property scope, periods, time conventions, consent and blocking. Search Console’s query table also has privacy-related omissions. A mismatch alone does not diagnose an implementation fault. Investigate the different definitions and coverage first, and do not manufacture an actual visitor total by correcting one source with an unrelated figure from the other.

Separate publication checks from interaction checks

After publication, verify the public URL and investigate search-side availability separately from interactive controls. A comparison or outbound action can be functionally tested even before substantial search traffic arrives. Do not wait for a ranking change to discover that its observation was never configured correctly. Keep release acceptance and later audience performance as distinct checks.

Example: clicks rise without approved outcomes

Suppose search clicks increase while approved outcomes do not. Investigate audience questions, content, comparison interactions and external eligibility in sequence. An increase in observed outbound clicks still does not establish later approval. Validate the observation at each stage before declaring a single cause. This creates a focused next investigation rather than an automatic instruction to rewrite every page.

Keep stable definitions for recurring comparisons

Fix the definitions used in recurring reviews and log configuration changes. Hand over access and settings for both systems when responsibility changes. These services can complement different questions without being interchangeable sources of one cheaper total. Retain the observations required for decisions and remove unused reports, while preserving enough context to interpret historical comparisons.
