Keep access routes distinct
The official options include Cline usage billing, ClinePass and your own provider connection. Model coverage and conditions differ. Do not assume that an unrelated chat subscription pays for an API connection. Confirm the provider actually selected in your settings before interpreting any displayed usage or comparing competing offers.
Record spending by model and task
Record the task, selected model, retries and acceptance outcome. A daily total alone hides whether one investigation caused most of the cost. With an external API, reconcile against the provider’s records and align reporting periods. A displayed task estimate and an invoice can cover different sets of requests.
Pilot within a bounded budget
Set a personal pilot budget and test one UI change, one test addition and one investigation. That budget is your limit, not a product price. Check whether exhausting it can trigger further spending. Compare the cost per accepted change rather than the number of requests you managed to send.
Include local-runtime costs
Local inference can change the API-spending model, but hardware, configuration, waiting and updates remain costs. Test the hardware you already have before assuming a new purchase is worthwhile. If several developers share a runtime, measure responsiveness under concurrent use rather than evaluating only an idle machine.
Example: accounting for rejected attempts
In a hypothetical pilot, six attempted tasks produce four accepted changes. Allocate all six attempts across those four outcomes and retain the review time spent on the rejected work. Repeat the method under a consistent billing route. This helps distinguish a genuinely cheaper provider from a better task description or a more experienced operator, rather than crediting every improvement to the model price.
Improve the task before buying more
If an agent repeatedly misses the same defect, the missing ingredient may be reproduction evidence rather than more allowance. Supply the failing input, expected output and excluded areas, then repeat the controlled task. Change provider or spending route when you can explain the remaining bottleneck, not merely after a frustrating run.
