Define what local means

Distinguish a local interface, local inference and no external connectivity. Define which you require, then inspect completion, chat, retrieval and auxiliary tools. A disconnected trial of the required features can reveal dependencies that a configuration screenshot alone would miss.

Consider role-based configuration in Continue

For separate completion and chat configurations, inspect Continue’s provider and offline documentation. Revalidate editing and tool behavior after a model change. Flexibility does not mean effortless operation: assign responsibility for updates and keep a known working configuration available for rollback.

Evaluate Cline’s action boundary

A local model connection does not make browser or integration activity local. For Cline, inspect the enabled tools and their approval settings as well as inference. Start confidential-workflow evaluation in a copy without external-service credentials so the boundary remains easy to understand.

Try Aider with selected files

For a terminal workflow with an explicit file set, test Aider on a small change. Verify that the chosen model can produce edits that apply correctly. Local inference alone does not guarantee useful coding behavior, so include boundary-case tests and rejection of a failed change in the evaluation.

Example: making the data boundary a gate

If external inference is prohibited, first eliminate configurations that cannot meet that requirement. Only then compare task completion and waiting time. Do not rank an inexpensive but ineligible configuration alongside an eligible one as if price could compensate for a mandatory boundary. Separate requirements from preferences before choosing a replacement.

Set migration criteria before switching

Use three representative tasks and record network behavior, completion time and repair effort. If a local setup does not meet the requirements, a separate procedure for confidential work may be more practical than replacing everything. Include model and hardware maintenance before deciding that a migration is sustainable.
