Choose a concrete first workload
Start with a function explanation, one test and a contained edit instead of a whole application. Evaluate explanation and correct modification separately. Use a low-sensitivity sample with known expected behavior before introducing private code. That gives you a useful baseline if the model, client or runtime later changes.
Measure the intended hardware
Memory needs and responsiveness vary with model size, quantization, context and concurrent work. Test startup, waiting and interference with ordinary development on the intended setup rather than buying hardware from a generic recommendation alone. If inference disrupts other tasks, include separation of workloads in the design.
Inspect every required data path
A local primary model does not establish the behavior of completion or auxiliary tools. Inspect the actual client configuration and record destinations by role. If external connectivity is prohibited, have the responsible administrator test required features disconnected and plan how models, updates and support material will be introduced.
Validate edits independently
An applied patch is not necessarily a correct patch. Run type checks, existing tests and the task-specific behavior check, with human review of expected results. If important conditions disappear in long context, narrow the task and file set. Establish a usable boundary before adopting the setup for routine development.
Example: checking a larger context
Move from a small function to a change with its caller and then a multi-file investigation. Correct short answers do not prove that longer context preserves every requirement. Record accepted results and waiting time at each stage. The outcome should define a useful task boundary for the local setup, not merely a successful installation.
Include ongoing maintenance
Repeat the same evaluation tasks after updates and keep the model and configuration version with the results. This provides a known-good fallback when behavior regresses. Lower API spending still leaves maintenance responsibilities. Include waiting and repair effort when deciding whether local inference is sustainable for your team.
