Start with an independently checkable task
Choose a small assignment whose correct answer you can explain without asking the builder. A hypothetical discount calculator can turn one thousand units at ten percent off into nine hundred. Specify empty input, negative values, decimals and the permitted discount range before generation. Those amounts define application behavior; they are not provider prices or measured performance. Adding accounts, payments and external APIs immediately increases the number of possible explanations for an incorrect result. Keep the first release bounded enough that you can trace an input to its expected output.
Give the builder acceptance conditions
Describe field labels, examples, invalid-input messages, phone use and whether persistence is required rather than requesting only a useful calculator. Treat appearance separately from calculation correctness. If comparing Replit, Lovable and Bolt, use the same assignment and avoid giving one candidate much more detailed requirements midway through the exercise. When the specification turns out to be incomplete, apply the clarified version consistently. Evaluate the ability to understand and maintain the requirements as well as the initial appearance. Otherwise the comparison mainly measures unequal instructions rather than the production workflow.
Choose where saved information lives
For a packing-list app, decide where an added item should survive. Storage on one device differs from account-based storage available on another. Add an item, close the view and reopen it. If another browser must show the same information, test that requirement separately. An item appearing once on screen does not prove that the intended persistence mechanism works. Exercise deletion, duplication and empty values as well. Ask for an explanation of the storage and retrieval route, then check the behavior. Understanding that route is more useful than accepting a generic message that saving has been implemented.
Treat shared data as a separate step
For a shared request or membership app, use fictional users A and B with distinct data. List the information each can view and the operations reserved for an administrator. A hidden button does not establish authorization at the storage boundary. Have someone who understands the data-access mechanism inspect it. If that cannot be verified for the first public release, a calculator without personal records may be an appropriate narrower assignment. A platform publishing feature does not automatically take over responsibility for the application behavior. Keep the initial learning project within the controls that can actually be checked.
Compare a follow-up change
After the first version, change one quantity limit or result message. Inspect what changed and whether unrelated behavior still works. Recheck invalid input, saved values and phone interaction rather than testing only the happy calculation. Do not adopt an unexplained patch simply because the preview appears attractive; retain a point from which the change can be reversed. Record which operations were completed independently and which required assistance. That produces a specific usability comparison for the intended beginner. Do not describe unperformed tasks as measured speed, success rate or proof that everyone can maintain the resulting app.
Separate creation cost from operation
A free first screen does not establish free ongoing editing, publishing and persistence. Check the allowances used by creation, correction and feature additions, then list hosting, database, external API and domain costs separately. Offers change, so confirm ordinary renewal charges and limits in the current checkout. Compare the upfront annual charge as well as any monthly equivalent. Before increasing spend after reaching an allowance, identify what caused the usage and what the additional purchase would complete. The relevant budget covers a maintained public app rather than only the cost of producing its first preview.
Verify the release and hand it over
Before publication, have another person follow the link and check valid input, errors, reloading and required persistence. Compare the published application with its editing preview. Leave a short record of source, configuration, data location, updating procedure and billing ownership, then have another operator change one message. On exit, stopping a development subscription and stopping the application are separate decisions. A useful first success is the ability to understand a small correction and deliver it publicly, not merely receiving a completion message from an AI. Expand to accounts and collaboration after that foundation works.
