Prices exclude tax, currency conversion and introductory discounts. Different currencies and billing periods are not directly comparable. Japanese support can apply to input, output or the interface; check each tool’s scope.
Use the same working project
Verify language tools, debugging, tests and required extensions in the same project. Record friction during ordinary edits, not only successful startup. Distinguish an unfamiliar shortcut from a missing capability so a first-day learning curve is not confused with a limitation that will remain after adoption.
Choose the Zed access route
Distinguish hosted models, independent provider access and external agents in Zed. External-agent authentication and billing belong to that arrangement. Record Cursor’s actual entitlement too, so the comparison explains which assumptions are controlled and which differ instead of treating every visible agent as the same service.
Compare accepted patches
Request the same contained change and inspect reasoning, affected files and tests. Narrow unrelated modifications before acceptance. More generated code in less time is not the intended outcome; require a second person to understand the patch and make the next revision as part of the comparison.
Separate spending and data conditions
Separate editor fees, provider keys, allowance and overages. Independently inspect data destinations for completion and agent work. Low spending is not authorization to send confidential material, and a local interface does not prove local inference. Treat mandatory data conditions as eligibility requirements rather than preferences offset by a lower price.
Example: fix one frontend interaction
For a hypothetical form, test correction and resubmission after invalid input, including keyboard interaction and persisted results. Apply identical acceptance criteria in both environments. Only after both produce the required behavior should interface preference and operating effort become deciding factors.
Keep the migration reversible
Complete the pilot in one project and preserve shared configuration separately from private credentials. Verify another maintainer’s handoff before a broad switch or cancellation. Removing an editor does not necessarily end independent provider contracts or permissions, so review those relationships separately at the end.
