Reasons to choose
  • Suitable for evaluating code-based API handoffs
  • Workflows documentation explains compute and memory accounting
  • Self-hosting provides an option to control deployment
  • Cloud pricing is based on workflow executions rather than individual steps
Before you subscribe
  • Workflows and String retire March 31, 2027; new signups and subscriptions are closed. Connect is unaffected
  • Development access does not establish a production-free entitlement
  • External API quotas and replay side effects require separate design
  • There is no implied permanent free Cloud tier

Start with the Workflows retirement

Pipedream officially announces retirement of Workflows and String on March 31, 2027, with Workflows closed to new signups and subscriptions. Connect is unaffected. The Workflows discussion here supports migration decisions by existing users, not adoption as a new business-workflow platform.

Locate the maintained logic

Map which logic would change after an API field or authentication change. Compare the maintainer’s ability to inspect inputs, trace failures and review modifications, not merely the presence of a code step. Logic understood by only one person is a handoff problem on either platform.

Assign infrastructure responsibility

n8n documents hosted and self-hosted operation; running your own instance brings storage and upgrade responsibilities. Check the hosted conditions of the specific Pipedream service. For location or contractual requirements, verify the actual data path and available terms rather than assuming the two platforms satisfy the same needs.

Translate meters into the same workload

Do not compare Workflows compute documentation directly with an n8n execution allowance as if the units were identical. For a hypothetical ten thousand inputs monthly, fix the work per input, waiting behavior and execution boundaries, then apply each actual billing rule. Keep upstream API costs separate.

Evaluate safe replay boundaries

Use a case where an earlier write succeeded and only the notification failed. Replaying the whole workflow may repeat an irreversible action. Decide how completed work is identified and how only the remaining operation proceeds. The existence of a replay control is not proof that replay is safe for the business.

Choose the responsibility you can sustain

Separate existing Workflows work that must move from integrations using the unaffected Connect product. Evaluate n8n Cloud or self-hosting as a destination and test code, authentication and replay. Do not assume every Pipedream connection must migrate merely because Workflows is retiring.

Split the migration inventory into three groups

Group existing work into informational notifications, record changes and irreversible external operations. Verify message content and counts for the first, before-and-after values for the second, and the destination’s completed-result lookup for the third. Do not use the same parallel-run procedure for every side effect.

After moving work to n8n, review whether old connections remain necessary and plan revocation of access no longer required. With a retirement deadline, keep completed and still-unverified work explicitly separate.
