Separate the timer from the reporting period

A timer set for nine in the morning does not say which enquiries belong in that run. Write a business definition such as the previous calendar day or the interval between two service cutoffs. Decide whether Monday combines the weekend or creates separate dated records. Compare examples immediately before, exactly at and after each boundary. The operator’s screen may display a different zone from the value used in a filter, so acceptance must compare the underlying timestamp and the intended business label.

Store an instant and a business date

Keep the event timestamp separate from its assigned business date. Displaying an instant in Japan time must not destroy the original instant. A date-only answer has no time-zone information; it should not silently become midnight in the operator’s zone. When someone changes the assigned business day, preserve the original timestamp and record the rule and reason for reassignment. This separation lets a later audit distinguish a changed cutoff policy from a correction to the incoming data.

Give the business calendar an owner

A business day can depend on national holidays, inventory closure and exceptional leave, not only weekends. Name the owner of the calendar and the reviewer of changes. An external holiday feed may not include company closures. Define a fallback when the calendar cannot be loaded: hold the record for review, use an explicitly approved cached version or stop the run. Operators should be able to see the next closure and the next working day without reading workflow code or guessing from a personal calendar.

Handle late arrivals explicitly

A request sent before the cutoff may arrive after an outage. Choose whether assignment uses arrival time or a trusted event time, and identify who approves corrections to closed periods. Do not silently replace a finalized report: retain the affected intake identifiers and old and revised totals. Run historical corrections separately from today’s intake so a replay cannot issue the same notification twice. Track the number of late records as an operational signal; it can reveal that the chosen closing interval is too short for the upstream system.

Test calendar transitions

Use fictional records around month end, year end, consecutive holidays and relevant daylight-saving changes. Japan has no daylight-saving transition, but an upstream service or customer location may have one. Review string comparisons and arithmetic that adds twenty-four hours as a substitute for finding the next business day. Record the input, expected business date and actual result together. Retain failed examples as regression cases, especially when a calendar policy changes. This is a proposed verification matrix, not a claim that any listed tool has passed these tests.

Make the rule explainable

Acceptance means someone other than the author can explain why an enquiry belongs to Monday. They should reach the same result from the timestamp, zone, calendar version and cutoff rule. Where users need the information, state the relevant zone in the form’s closing instructions. Keep this rule separate from checks for missing records and from cost estimates: a correct business date does not prove that every record was retrieved or that the batch completed. Use the linked batch guide to verify those boundaries separately.
