Preserve essential language work

List essential operations in an existing Java or Python project: references, renaming, debugging and tests, for example. Exercise them under the retained JetBrains setup and the proposed Zed setup with the same project. Verify ordinary configuration and extensions rather than only a feature label. A preferred AI response cannot compensate for a daily language operation you cannot reproduce. Record unfamiliar first-day controls separately from missing capabilities. This makes migration effort visible without turning an initial learning curve into a permanent product limitation or ignoring a real requirement because a demonstration looked impressive.

Map the Zed provider relationship

Zed’s own model configuration and an ACP external agent are separate paths. Official documentation assigns the external agent its runtime, authentication, models, tools and provider relationship. A key entered for Zed’s model access does not automatically configure that agent or its billing. Choose one route before the pilot and inspect the provider’s conditions. Separate free editor access from the cost of independently connected inference. That mapping is useful both for budgeting and data handling: the visible editor alone does not identify who processes a request or owns its retention and account settings.

Map JetBrains feature boundaries

JetBrains documents separate model assignment, completion configuration and compatible-agent behavior. Local models do not replace every capability; the documentation states limitations for agents and MCP tools. One successful local conversation is not evidence that predictions and every other feature avoid external processing. Organization administration can also restrict independent providers. Build an eligible configuration for the features you need before comparing it with a Zed route. This keeps a narrower local-chat setup from being presented as equivalent to a complete managed workflow that includes assistance the local arrangement cannot provide.

Hypothetical task: an optional service field

For a hypothetical customer-search service, add an optional region filter. Preserve prior results when absent, filter when present and define invalid values explicitly. Give both setups the type, caller, tests and execution configuration, including the debugging path. Check that the explanation matches the diff and keep unrelated dependencies outside the task. This is not a capability ranking. It tests AI assistance together with the language workflow responsible developers already use, so the result includes preserving the constraints of maintained software rather than only producing a plausible new function.

Compare the complete contract stack

Separate Zed Personal, Pro, Business and independent providers from the JetBrains IDE license, AI entitlement and separate connections. An administrative layer does not necessarily purchase a fixed inference balance. JetBrains individual, organizational and Central arrangements also differ. A hypothetical estimate should show existing usable access, new fees, additional inference, migration and support time. If one side reuses a sunk existing contract while the other is a new purchase, state that assumption. It may be a valid local decision but is not a universal price difference for every developer or organization.

Finish with another maintainer

After both setups pass required operations, have another maintainer perform a follow-up edit. Preserve configuration names, model routes, startup commands and tested versions without sharing secret values. On retirement, review the IDE, AI and external-agent agreements separately and inspect shared settings for obsolete connections. Removing an editor is not a complete migration. Verify that ordinary Git and checks can maintain the project after the change. This makes the decision transferable and prevents a successful first operator from concealing the training or setup work every subsequent collaborator would otherwise repeat.
