Start with the existing IDE
Record the IDE product, version, plugin and effective entitlement. A visible AI Chat entry alone does not establish that the plugin has been installed. Verify ordinary language navigation and test execution first, then assess whether AI suggestions fit those operations. This tests the actual benefit of keeping an established environment rather than judging a new feature in isolation.
Separate chat and agent requirements
Decide whether the task needs an explanation or delegated multi-file changes. Feature requirements differ. A working chat response does not prove that editing, completion and integrated agents share the same provider configuration or entitlement. Test the feature you intend to use, not merely the easiest successful interaction.
Check local-model limitations
The documented local-model path has feature limitations, including that agents cannot use local models. Completion also has separate configuration behavior. If keeping code away from external inference is mandatory, inspect destinations for every required feature rather than treating one successful local connection as evidence for the entire IDE.
Identify the paid trigger
Distinguish ongoing AI Free access from a trial. Individual and organization arrangements differ, and Central migration can change how an organization allocates usage. Include the IDE license in the check. Upgrade when a required entitlement or allowance is missing, rather than assuming every visible plan offers the same complete workflow.
Example: pilot a type change
For a hypothetical customer-list filter, add one optional field while preserving behavior when it is absent. Supply the type, caller and existing tests, then proceed from explanation to edits. Review the diff and verify the missing-field case independently. This produces evidence about a real maintenance path without claiming a benchmark or a hands-on result in this guide.
Plan handoff and removal
Keep a non-secret record of configuration and entitlement for the next maintainer. When stopping use, separate the AI subscription, IDE license and any third-party provider agreement. Preserve code through ordinary version control. Disabling a plugin should not be assumed to cancel billing arrangements held in another account or service.
