Define what the switch changes

Cline documents editor and CLI routes and lists supported editors. You can keep Cursor as the editing surface while piloting Cline as a separate agent path. In that case, editor ergonomics and agent results are different observations. Do not run both agents on the same task simultaneously; give separate branches the same starting state. Record environment, provider, authentication and change ownership. This makes a difference attributable and lets you evaluate whether the missing capability requires changing the whole development setup or only adding a distinct route within it.

Evaluate provider administration

For Cursor, verify whether the actual contract supports the required model. For Cline, distinguish usage billing, ClinePass and independently configured providers. Flexibility brings responsibility for invoices, updates and connection failures. Identify the person who diagnoses those failures and recreate the same setup on another machine. A longer provider list is not useful by itself if the one configuration your team needs is difficult to maintain. Do not assume a separate chat subscription pays for an API route. Compare the complete supported arrangement, including the administrative work behind a successful response.

Hypothetical task: duplicate submissions

Use a hypothetical form that creates duplicate records after repeated save clicks. Investigate retry and persistence conditions as well as the button. Check single submission, rapid repeats and retry after a failed connection using the same sample data. Begin with diagnosis and agree the intended behavior before edits. Keep cleanup of real duplicate data outside this pilot. This is not a reported product defect or accuracy result. It tests how each workflow handles an issue spanning interface and storage while preserving a clear boundary between investigation, implementation and external data operations.

Test approvals and recovery independently

When testing Cline approval settings or checkpoints, do not infer recovery of external side effects. Use ordinary Git inspection for local changes in both setups. Deliberately reject a patch and verify that pre-existing human work remains intact after returning to the start. Separate reads, edits, commands and remote operations. Fewer prompts should not automatically receive a better score; the supervisor must understand what was allowed and interrupt unwanted actions. Judge recovery from the resulting files and remaining diff, rather than assuming that a reassuring interface label establishes complete reversibility.

Compare cost through acceptance

Different models can change both consumption and results. Record what was controlled and what differed. A hypothetical weekly evaluation should include fixed access, inference, provider support, supervision and rejected attempts. If the setups cannot use equivalent models, do not present the result as an inherent capability ranking. Allocate the complete route to an accepted patch, not just its final successful request. Justify a higher plan or different route using a demonstrated capacity or model-entitlement shortage. More output alone is not evidence that the resulting work is more useful or economical.

Preserve configuration and retire unused access

Preserve the selected model, route, required variable names and tested version without secret values. Require another maintainer to reproduce the form change. Ending Cursor access, changing a Cline route and retiring an independent provider are different actions. Removing an editor or extension does not establish that every invoice or credential relationship ended. Coexistence can be reasonable when roles are explicit, but define which agent owns each task and keep accepted changes in ordinary Git history. The chosen setup should remain explainable to the next operator rather than depending on one person’s private connection knowledge.
