Define the migration scope
Write down whether the pilot changes the editor, extensions, provider configuration or all three. More simultaneous changes create more possible causes when something fails. Preserve the starting configuration and change components deliberately so you can attribute friction to a specific part of the setup.
Evaluate completion and tasks separately
Measure everyday completion separately from a multi-file agent task. Note interruption, supplying the needed context and reviewing the patch as independent observations. An impressive large-task demonstration does not establish that repeated small interactions throughout the day will be equally convenient.
Put configuration flexibility in context
If configuring providers in Continue, assign an owner. For Cursor, verify the model access and costs of the actual contract you would use. More options are valuable only when the team can maintain the required configuration and reproduce the same working arrangement on another developer’s machine.
Verify the data boundary
A local editor does not prove local inference. Verify destinations, context and retention conditions for the configuration you actually use. If local-only inference is a requirement, include completion and auxiliary features in your verification instead of assuming that selecting one local model changes every data path.
Example: a controlled environment change
For a completion complaint, first edit the same file for a comparable period and note interruptions and unwanted suggestions. Then request the same code change and inspect the diff. Separate unfamiliar-interface friction from result quality, so a first-day learning curve is not confused with a limitation that will remain after routine use.
Compare total recurring effort
Compare subscription, inference, maintenance and migration effort together. A configurable arrangement can make sense when someone can support it; a more integrated workflow can make sense when reducing administration is a real requirement. Neither decision follows from the lowest number on a pricing page alone.
