Preserve essential IDE operations
Inventory language analysis, refactoring, debugging and tests. Changing AI access does not necessarily require changing all of those operations. Pilot an eligible option in the current environment first, then consider moving the editing surface if a concrete required behavior cannot otherwise be achieved.
Consider existing entitlement
Inspect whether an existing Copilot arrangement supports the required IDE and feature. State the remaining gap before adding another recurring fee. Personal availability and permission to process organization code are separate conditions, so include organizational policy rather than treating an individual trial as sufficient approval.
Consider owning the provider setup
A configurable route such as Continue needs an owner for models, credentials and feature settings. Flexibility is not a guarantee of low maintenance. For mandatory local inference, verify completion and auxiliary behavior as well as the main conversation. Evaluate the complete required configuration rather than one isolated provider connection.
Consider an editor migration separately
For a move to an environment such as Cursor, test everyday editing as well as model output. Start, test and inspect Git in the actual project and record the setup needed. A successful new demonstration app does not establish that the existing maintenance workflow transfers intact.
Example: apply mandatory conditions first
Suppose a hypothetical team requires its existing debugger and a defined data boundary. Eliminate ineligible configurations first, then compare review time and cost on the same task. Do not let a lower price compensate for a mandatory condition in an arbitrary overall score; such a candidate may be unusable after purchase.
Coordinate contract and configuration changes
Verify a follow-up change by another maintainer before retiring the old configuration. AI, IDE and independent-provider agreements may have different account owners. Preserve code and shared settings and verify both billing and access changes rather than assuming a plugin removal completes the whole transition.
