Use your existing environment as the baseline
If retaining an established IDE and GitHub process matters, first confirm that Copilot offers the functions you need in that client. If you are evaluating a different environment for inspecting code and delegating larger changes, include Cursor in the trial. Do not infer compatibility from the product name alone; use the extensions and repository setup you actually maintain.
Compare the required tier, not the lowest tier
Cursor’s current entry paid tier has material model and feature restrictions. Copilot availability also varies by plan and client. Before choosing the cheaper line in a table, align the required model access, agent execution location and treatment of additional consumption. A lower entry price is not necessarily the price of equivalent functionality for your project.
Review team controls separately
Multiplying an individual subscription price by headcount does not establish that a rollout meets company requirements. Check member access, removal of departing staff, budgets and data handling. Assign responsibility for which repositories and information can be used. This is particularly relevant when developers have individual accounts alongside a company-managed development environment.
Use the same reproducible patch task
Create separate branches for the same bug in the same repository. Compare correctness, unnecessary changes, test coverage and review time, and record consumption. This guide does not claim a measured performance winner. The purpose of the task is to discover which workflow reduces effort in your own project while leaving a change that another person can understand and maintain.
