Choose a role in the working day
Identify whether the need is short completion, explanation of existing logic or implementation of a bounded issue. Those roles have different frequency and review requirements. Record an ordinary working period and choose the recurring difficulty for the first pilot. Measure interruptions and effort to accept useful work rather than the amount of generated code. If your current IDE is mandatory, verify the relevant capability in that exact client and version. A feature shown in one Copilot surface should not be assumed to exist identically in every other surface.
Check effective organization access
Personal availability and permission to process company code are separate conditions. Identify the contract owner, allowed features and models, and the person responsible for billing. Include removal of departing staff as well as onboarding. For a team pilot, use the settings and repository arrangement the organization would actually operate. Do not infer managed access from one developer’s screen. A capability is useful only when it can be used within the relevant policy and supported by the people who will administer it after the initial trial.
Read the current usage system
The current official plans describe GitHub AI Credits for agent and review-related use. Do not translate historical premium-request quotas directly into current capacity. Different models and features can consume resources differently, and a displayed credit value is not a cash refund of the subscription. Separate included resources, any changing additional allotment and settings for further spending. Reconcile the effective usage view with the billed account. This establishes the arrangement you are evaluating before an older price comparison or request count becomes the basis of a purchasing decision.
Hypothetical task: CSV validation
Consider a hypothetical CSV importer that needs to reject invalid dates. Independently define a valid row, an invalid date, missing input and a duplicate row. Supply the converter and existing tests, and limit the request to validation. Inspect expected test outputs and confirm that valid imports still work. This is an evaluation method, not a measured accuracy claim. It reveals whether assistance respects the project’s actual constraints and whether a reviewer can recognize a superficially passing suite that merely encodes the generated implementation’s assumptions.
Evaluate review as a separate task
Useful code assistance does not guarantee low review-triage effort. For a review pilot, start with a PR whose requirements and known constraints a human understands. Classify feedback as reproduced defects, requirement questions, maintenance proposals or incorrect assumptions. Include one follow-up commit after a finding is addressed. Decide where tests and final human acceptance remain recorded. A larger comment count is not the desired result, and automated feedback should not silently replace the merge conditions your team relies on for correctness and responsibility.
Define the paid trigger
Repeat representative work on Free or your existing agreement and classify interruptions by capacity, model eligibility or missing feature. An upgrade does not necessarily fix a problem caused by unclear requirements or incompatible configuration. For a hypothetical weekly evaluation, record accepted tasks, repair time, review time and additional usage together. Compare individual and organizational arrangements only after aligning their required controls. Where annual billing is considered, distinguish the monthly equivalent from the actual payment and commitment. Purchase the missing usable resource, rather than assuming every higher tier improves the whole workflow.
Preserve the project beyond access
Keep accepted diffs and verification in ordinary Git history and issue records instead of leaving essential behavior only in an AI conversation. A second maintainer should be able to start the project and repeat the CSV examples. On a change of access, review personal subscriptions, organization assignments, extensions and external connections separately. If review assistance is removed, inspect the resulting required checks. A successful code handoff and completed billing or access changes are separate outcomes; verify both before considering a migration or retirement finished.
