Locate the existing specification
Inspect whether requirements are split across issues, design documents and PR descriptions. If adopting specs, decide which record becomes authoritative and who updates it. Duplicating requirements without an ownership rule can create conflicting instructions. The new process should make the current specification clearer, not add another unexplained document.
Compare planning on a contained change
Use a filter addition with identical screen, input, persistence and error requirements. Read the plan before the patch. Evaluate whether the specification reduces unresolved assumptions rather than awarding credit for its mere existence. Both candidates should be judged against the same independent acceptance criteria.
Review automatic execution
Review trigger-action behavior for automation such as hooks. Avoid unintentional duplication with existing CI or unnecessary remote work on every edit. Assign ownership of the development automation as well as the generated application. A useful individual experiment still needs an understandable execution policy before team-wide rollout.
Compare usable entitlements
Do not compare an existing Copilot arrangement with Kiro credits by raw prompt count. Record consumption and repair effort for the same accepted task. Include model eligibility and organization requirements, and explain the specific shortage an upgrade resolves rather than treating a larger allowance as an automatic benefit.
Example: hand off a changed search rule
For a hypothetical search change, add organization matching to name matching and define empty input, one-field matches and no results. Have a second person verify it, then change the requirement once more. Inspect where outdated conditions remain. That second cycle tests whether the process can maintain specifications rather than merely create them.
Check migration assumptions explicitly
Older Amazon Q Developer material needs a separate check because AWS has announced an IDE-plugin support ending. Do not assume Kiro access is simply an unchanged entitlement under a new label. Preserve code and specifications, then inspect contracts, connections and team review procedures before retiring the earlier arrangement.
