Align the finding with the code revision

Before reading a finding, identify the reviewed commit, comparison base and changed files. Later edits can change the situation even if a line number looks familiar. Do not mechanically apply an old comment to the current implementation; preserve the revision on which the problem was reported. CodeRabbit describes incremental review as commits are added, but the maintainer still needs to know which patch is being accepted. Where multiple tools are compared, establish whether they reviewed the same change before treating their comments as comparable evidence.

Trace the affected behavior

Assume the finding might be correct and ask which user, input and action sequence would expose it. Call sites can reveal a value that never reaches the function or a state prohibited by the agreed specification. Conversely, a value unavailable in the visible form may arrive through another supported route. Do not prioritize only from forceful wording or a severity label. Write the affected behavior and reproduction conditions. If a premise remains uncertain, assign an owner to resolve it rather than immediately dismissing the finding as a false positive.

Use four practical decision categories

Separate reproduced defects, unresolved requirements, maintenance proposals and erroneous or duplicate comments. An uncertain specification does not need to be forced into a true-or-false finding. Keep maintenance suggestions distinct from defects requiring immediate correction, and record why deferred work belongs elsewhere. Combine multiple comments about one underlying cause into one repair task. Comment count is not a count of discovered bugs. Preserve the basis for accepting, holding or declining the suggestion. A useful category should tell the next reviewer what action remains, rather than creating an elaborate reporting taxonomy.

Define the resolving evidence before editing

For an accepted finding, define the input and independently justified expected behavior before applying the proposed patch. A test built from the same incorrect premise can approve a change that merely looks convincing. Where practical, reproduce the failure first and run the same check after correction. Use an isolated copy or verification environment for data changes and external side effects. The important property is the relationship between the reported problem and the resolving check, not the number of new tests. Do not record an unexecuted check as a successful result.

Explain why a finding is declined

When declining a suggestion, record the incorrect premise rather than only saying no issue. If a precondition is guaranteed before the function call, identify the supporting location. Distinguish behavior that happens not to occur today from a condition the specification promises to maintain. GitHub describes missed issues and false positives among AI review limitations, which makes review of comments and patches necessary. If a misunderstanding repeats, improve the relevant explanation or review instruction. Do not remove a useful checking scope merely to reduce the visible number of inconvenient comments.

Verify changes intended to reduce noise

When adjusting generated-file, branch or draft-review scope, check that important changes remain covered. Notifications duplicating a type checker or existing analyzer may be assigned to one clear place. However, reducing noise should not create a region no one reviews. After a configuration change, inspect an intended included change and an intended excluded change, then document the resulting scope. Read current product-specific configuration and allowance guidance. A setting copied from an old article or a different contract is not evidence that the actual repository is reviewed under the intended conditions.

Compare the work required to accept a change

Compare a dedicated service such as CodeRabbit with existing Copilot access using the same pull request, revision and reviewer. A hypothetical ten-comment exercise can record reproduction, specification resolution, repair, rejection reason and human investigation time. Ten is an evaluation-method example, not a measured product accuracy result. Consider both the value of an important confirmed finding and the effort spent investigating incorrect suggestions. Before widening scope, hand the decision rules and actual examples to the next operator. Additional payment should address an identified capability or operating requirement rather than reward a larger raw comment count.
