Align the review requirement
Decide whether the requirement is summarization, defect candidates in a diff or wider design review. Do not compare CodeRabbit Free summaries with a paid review entitlement, and verify the actual Copilot arrangement. Judge the information required for the same review target rather than each product’s entire range of capabilities.
Establish an independent view of the PR
Have a reviewer understand requirements, change intent and known constraints before comparing feedback. Do not make the first AI finding the answer key. Reproduce relevant inputs and record incorrect assumptions and duplicate comments alongside accepted findings. This avoids treating notification volume as an accuracy measure.
Inspect the next review cycle
Test a follow-up commit, not only the initial review. Observe where unresolved issues remain and how new changes are assessed. Keep an explicit place for the human acceptance decision if the thread becomes difficult to follow. Automated approval does not justify omitting required tests or specification checks.
Include reading and triage time
Record triage time as well as seats and limits. If an existing entitlement meets the review requirement, avoiding another service can be a valid outcome. Justify an additional contract with a specific improvement, such as reduced waiting or a useful discovery, rather than a larger list of automated comments.
Example: classify a small finding sample
In a hypothetical trial, classify ten findings as reproduced problems, requirement questions, maintenance suggestions or misunderstandings. Evaluate whether important issues became understandable and fixable, not which service commented more often. This is an evaluation method, not an empirical accuracy ranking of the products.
Preserve acceptance rules on change
After selection, identify repositories and required acceptance conditions. When removing a service, inspect app access, billing and branch rules separately. Read the resulting merge requirements so dropping an automated reviewer does not unintentionally remove the human review process or other checks the team still needs.
