Specify the restricted material

Distinguish customer data, secrets, private source and error logs. A broad phrase such as company information is not enough to evaluate a setup. Use a low-sensitivity sample to map destinations and action scope, then have the responsible administrator assess whether that boundary meets your actual requirement.

Separate the client and inference provider

Continue, Cline and Aider require decisions about models and operating configuration. A client running on your machine can still send context to an external provider. List the inference provider, connection method and auxiliary features instead of assuming that reading one client’s terms covers the entire arrangement.

Verify the complete local setup

For local inference, verify completion, chat, code retrieval and external tools. Plan model distribution, updates and failure handling. No network traffic does not prove useful coding behavior, so assess change quality as a separate acceptance condition using the tasks your developers actually perform.

Review action authority too

Even an acceptable inference boundary can leave excessive production access. Review readable folders, executable commands and remote-service credentials separately. Remove unnecessary credentials from the pilot and distinguish investigation from mutation. Data-handling controls and action authority solve different parts of the operating problem.

Example: reassessing a provider change

When a provider changes, do not assume the approved boundary remains intact because the client is unchanged. Recheck context, retention terms and external tools. Record the tested model and configuration version and define which changes trigger reassessment. This preserves the assumptions behind the original adoption decision as the software evolves.

Record the accepted configuration

Record the accepted model, destination, permitted actions and excluded data alongside the product name. Define which configuration changes require reassessment. This makes the decision transferable to another administrator and avoids treating approval of one setup as permission for every later provider or feature.
