Preserve known-good and failing states

Record the application revision, runtime, lockfile and execution conditions. An unrecorded local reinstall is difficult for another developer to reproduce. Recreate both states in separate working copies and confirm that the same input changes behavior. This provides an independent basis for assessing the agent’s explanation.

Separate package and surrounding changes

Inspect transitive dependencies, configuration and build steps as well as the package intentionally upgraded. Ask the agent to enumerate relevant changes and label hypotheses. Rather than immediately accepting a patch matching one error message, use small controlled checks to identify which difference changes the outcome.

Narrow the change history

Git bisect can narrow history when revisions have a reliable good-or-bad test. An intermittent failure needs a better decision rule before it can be treated as deterministic. Use the agent to organize observations and explain reproduction conditions, while preserving the evidence behind each classification.

Define compatibility after the fix

An error disappearing is not the complete compatibility check. Validate prior inputs, outputs and release builds. Inspect whether the patch weakens validation or removes failing tests merely to obtain a passing result. Keep unrelated cleanup separate so the necessary behavior change remains understandable.

Example: a changed date conversion

Suppose a hypothetical update shifts a displayed date by one day. Fix timezone, input format and runtime, then compare the same value before and after. Treat the agent’s suggestions as hypotheses and test the changed condition explicitly. This example is a method, not a claim that a particular library or coding product contains that defect.

Choose tools by reviewable evidence

IDE assistance and repository agents are candidates, not substitutes for a reproducible environment. Pilot their ability to produce evidenced investigation and a reviewable patch. Purchase extra access only for an identified shortage. Preserve versions, checks and remaining limitations for the next maintainer after accepting the fix.
