Model complexity beyond product count

Colours, sizes, delivery regions and lead times add complexity independently of catalogue size. Made-to-order and digital items differ from stocked goods. Write several representative orders and map selection, delivery and cancellation so the comparison reflects the operation rather than a product-counter total.

Apply one requirements sheet

Check the same payment, delivery, product-type and notification requirements on Shopify, Squarespace and Wix. Mark additional apps and services separately from native capabilities. The ability of the actual operator to process ordinary orders consistently matters more than the small size of the initial catalogue.

Compare low and busy months

Separate base fee, platform transaction fees, payment processing, required apps and domain renewal. Fixed cost weighs more in a low-sales month; transaction fees and handling effort matter more during a busy period. Label illustrative sales assumptions and calculate several scenarios rather than presenting a forecast as actual performance.

Test the complete order journey

Use the candidate’s documented testing procedure; Shopify provides an explicit test-order guide. Inspect notifications, inventory and order processing. Include a check that the store is restored to its intended live configuration, because test modes can prevent ordinary purchases. A real transaction followed by a refund can have different fee consequences.

Plan the next operator

Document order processing, product editing and subscription ownership with appropriate access. Even a one-person launch needs understandable history and support procedures for a successor. When volume grows, review fulfilment and enquiry capacity before assuming that a redesign is the most important next investment.

Use a five-product launch acceptance sheet

Use five hypothetical products including standard stock, a size variant and a made-to-order item. Verify descriptions, lead times, shipping and availability, then name the person and checks following an order. Equal product counts can hide very different fulfilment work, so do not test only the easiest item.

At launch, confirm the intended live purchase state and delivery of alerts to the real operator. Keep demonstration records distinct from commercial data so placeholder products and contacts do not accidentally remain in the selling journey.
