In this guide
  1. Map the order lifecycle
  2. Normalize selling assumptions
  3. Compare the work each team performs
  4. Expose the surrounding subscriptions
  5. Include the cost of changing later
  6. Compare one representative operating day

Map the order lifecycle

List product entry, variants, inventory, shipping, cancellation, returns and customer communication. Digital delivery and services should not be forced into the same process as physical goods. Mark each step as native functionality, an additional app or manual work on both candidates.

Normalize selling assumptions

Use the same merchant region, currency, payment method and monthly order volume. Separate subscription, platform fees, processing and apps, and check what a zero-fee claim actually covers. Keep introductory offers outside ordinary-month estimates and inspect refund conditions independently.

Compare the work each team performs

Rehearse a fulfilment worker processing orders and a content editor updating company information. A comfortable store interface does not remove repeated agency work for editorial changes. Conversely, easy page editing does not offset a manual order-reconciliation process when transaction volume is high.

Expose the surrounding subscriptions

Check the current availability and price of any required booking, subscription, member-content or mailing functions. A published integration example does not establish that a feature is included in your plan. List app providers, support ownership and the data retained when an additional service is cancelled.

Include the cost of changing later

For an existing business, plan product, customer and order-history migration separately from URL continuity. Do not assume every record type can be moved without checking. Select the candidate that fits the primary workload and validate a small representative catalogue before committing the whole operation.

Compare one representative operating day

Use a hypothetical day with a product-description correction, a delivery-address request and an editorial case-study update. Map who performs and checks each task on both candidates. Where additional apps are needed, record movement between systems and any repeated data entry.

The balance of that day reveals whether selling or publishing dominates. Including coordination and reconciliation work exposes costs that a feature-count comparison misses and makes the choice more specific to the actual team.
